Alesha Dixon's hairstylist on genius hacks to keep your locks looking glam!

She was the mastermind behind Alesha Dixon's stunning lob (long bob, FYI) and those beautiful honey-hued highlights, so when we bumped into celebrity hairstylist Michelle Sultan this week, we just had to pick her brains on all things hair.

Luckily for us, the beauty genius who is a dab hand with everything from double barrel tongs to backcombing brushes gave us the goss on how to keep our hair looking more lustrous than limp. Heck, we might even adore her more than Kim Kardashian and Jessica Alba's hairstyling maestro, Jen Atkin.

YEAH. We went there.

We love Kendall Jenner's sleek look! How can we keep our hair straight for longer?

If you want smooth hair I always advise people, especially Alesha, to wrap their hair around their head using a hairnet, so you use your head shape as a huge roller.

Starting from the back, pull all of your hair around your head until it reaches the front and tie it down with a hairnet before you go to bed because sometimes when you pull hair into a ponytail you get that mark. Imagine what rollers do to your hair – this technique hugs your head and keeps it smooth as it grabs the shape. Hairnets aren't glam or sexy but they work!

Going the other way, how do we keep our hair looking voluminous and full of body, especially during festive party season?

I love the Philip Kingsley range – the Elasticizer is the holy grail of hair products - and I always use the heat protection spray on shoots because they smell great. Use good products that wont weigh your hair down and go back to old fashioned techniques like using Velcro rollers after a blow-dry. Sleep in rollers are also great for fine hair.

Give us your verdict on Khloe Kardashian's long bob! It looks amazing – but do you think it takes a lot of styling?

I think she's a bit late – I'm surprised! I love it though because she's beautiful and she's got the height so she didn't need all of that hair. I feel like she's said to her hairdresser, "Just cut off the bottom!" I like the bluntness and that's so easy to achieve with just a pair of scissors.

Are there bargain hair products you're loving at the moment?

The Got2Be Volumising Style Powder, £4.05 is the best thing ever - just put that in your roots for volume. A lot of people are going silvery grey and I like Jerome Russell's B Blonde Silver Toner, £4.49. It's probably the best one I've used and it's so cheap.

I reach for the KMS California range, too and everything is affordable. I find that not enough know about it but it's great salon quality! I've got an amazing comb that has two layers and I use it all the time for getting volume in at the roots. Always pop volume spray or hairspray in the roots before backcombing and then spray some more on the top.

What tools do you keep going back to when tending to Alesha?

My GHD Airdryer, Cloud Nine hairstraighteners and Kerastraight hair treatments always.

Do celebs come to you with any common hair worries or woes?

I'm always looking for amazing treatment for her hair to keep it in optimum condition because there's so much styling. She doesn't get a chance to moan about her split ends because I'm always there chopping them off.

One of the most common complaints is dryness due to the amount of heat that has been applied to the hair and I'll do that several times a week. I'm always looking for the next big treatment – I like Olaplex. It's the holy grail of hair products in salons and I'll mix that in with the dye as it rebuilds the broken bonds after colouring or after damage. There are so many products, like Fibreplex by Schwarzkopf that you can get on the high-street though.

Are there any tips, tricks and hacks that you give celebs so they can take care of their locks properly at home?

Do you know what - I'm always there! Most of them tend not to do their own hair because that's what I'm there for and with Alesha, I've never seen her hair in a state. That said, I always tell them to treat and condition, if that's the only thing they do. Alesha is so low maintenance – she puts it in a ponytail and she's done.

I've also been working with Fleur East and I love her curls. She's so good at treating her hair and she knows exactly what to do with it. (We love the Shea Moisture range which is brand new to Boots, for hydrating and restoring dry, dehydrated tresses).

All hail Michelle!
