Girls star Lena Dunham gave us some fabulous weekend nail inspiration this week.

We're talking spots, stripes, nude and monochrome... on her toenails AND fingernails. And most importantly they look pretty simple to copy. Hoo-rah!

The Golden-Globe winning author and actress took to Instagram on Thursday (17 September) to show off her mani-pedi, which came thanks to the team at Olive & June in Beverly Hills, L.A.

"Thank you @oliveandjune for making a creaky hormonal nightmare of a woman feel like a chic emblem of 1980s power," Lena posted.

"Love you and all you do to keep nail salons ethical and healthy," she added.

Going for black and white stripes on her toenails, along with nude fingernails which each had a statement black polka-dot, Lena's choice of colour and style was a pretty fabulous one.

And you know what they say about nudes and monochromes? They go with everything.

To copy Lena's toes, always start a black polish job with a clear base coat – otherwise that black pigment could stain your nails terribly. Try L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Polish in Black Swan, £4.99, superdrug.com which is rich, dark and shiny – everything we love in a black polish.

Apply two thin coats to each nail, allowing it to dry thoroughly between each coat, then grab a white nail art pen like Barry M Nail Art Pen in White, £4.99, barrym.com.

Using your pen, draw 4-6 fine, vertical lines down each nail – depending on the size of your nail – and make sure you lean on a flat, sturdy surface to help give you a steady hand.

When these are all dry, finish with a glossy topcoat to add shine, protection and a long-lasting finish. We love Bourjois 3D Gel Top Coat, £5.99, superdrug.com.

For your fingernails, again start with a protective base coat, then grab your favourite nude polish and paint two thin coats over each nail. Our current must-have is Butter London Nail Lacquer in Cuppa, £12, butterlondon.co.uk.

When totally dry, dip an old, thin make-up brush (something like an eyeliner or lipliner brush will work) into your black polish and dot each nail with a black polka dot. Don't try to paint them in exactly the same place on each nail, either. Look at Lena's carefully and you'll see hers are all in different places. And it looks much cooler.

Finish with that trusty topcoat and you're done. Simple, right?

Thanks Lena.
