That's why we asked manicurist to the stars Kirsty Morgan, to spill her biggest beauty tips so you can keep your talons in tip top shape this summer - and with celebs like Lauren Goodger and Ex On The Beach's Megan McKenna all fighting to get a piece of her, her answers are worth their weight in gold!
All the celebs are rocking graphic lines. How do we achieve the look with minimum mess?
Thin nail art brushes are key but a cotton bud soaked in nail polish remover will do. That said, even a humble wooden cocktail stick is amazing when attempting nail art!
We really like the half moon nails trend but how do we get the look ourselves at home?
I use the paper hole reinforcements to achieve the half moon effect. Put half over your nail and cuticle and press down on each side. The simply paint the nail with your chosen colour.
Once that's done, peel off the sticker and use a brush (an old eyeshadow brush works wonders) soaked in nail polish remover and clean up any mess! Yes it's bit tricky at first but just practice, practice, practice and you'll master it.
What is the best way to prep the nail before a manicure?
Always make sure the nail is free from any oils by wiping it over with something that has isopropyl alcohol in it. I push back cuticles and I tend to only remove cuticles that are in the way of the nail bed. Leave healthy cuticles where they are! Lastly, you need a good even file to finish.
(At the moment, we're crushing over the Deborah Lippmann Cuticle Lab Set, £35. It comes complete with a cuticle perfecting tool and exfoliator, alongside a nourishing repair cream and cuticle oil for a hit of hydration that will make your mani last longer).
Have you worked with nail jewels? What's the best way to keep them on?
I only use nail jewels with gel nails (Gelish is great) as I find this is the best way to keep them in place. The gems are set into the gel so they will not budge. I once did a Swarovski pedicure which took forever but the finish was beautiful!
Is there a simple way to apply nail stencils?
You need a very steady hand, practice and tweezers are key!
What advice do you give to your celeb clients to make their mani last?
Good nail prep for sure. Try to apply cuticle oil most days to moisturise the nails and keep them flexible. Oh, and get your staff to do the washing up, ha!
We're loving the candy mani at the moment. What are your go-to pastel shades and brands?
I use mostly UV gel products and I am in love with the Calgel colours. They do a great range of pastel hues and I'm particularly in love with Ticklish Pear. For normal polishes my go to brand is always O.P.I and the All That Jazz range at Nail Harmony. That said, Morgan Taylor have some fab colours that normally match up to my gelish colours!
Lastly, we've seen a shift to shorter nails! What looks best on them?
I LOVE block colours on short nails, a fresh white or nude really looks great. But a classic red is always a great option!
