No one likes to spend time applying a perfect base only to find it's done a disappearing act come lunchtime. And if there's a product that can prevent this, while also keeping shine at bay and improving skin appearance, we're sold!
With this in mind, we tried heaps of the most sophisticated primers to bring you our pick of the best...
Benefit The POREfessional, £24.50
We've quizzed oodles of celebs on their beauty must-haves and many hail this as their primer of choice. It's an oil-free, silicone-based formula that feels incredibly silky on the skin. It comes out of the tube a pale peach colour but applies totally clear. While it didn't make our pores invisible (no product will!), it did have a blurring effect, helping them appear less apparent. You can also apply this on top of your make-up for a quick pick-me-up during the day.
Rimmel Fix & Perfect Pro Primer, £6.99
This is the cheapest of the bunch but it really packs a punch. It's a thin, soft lotion that feels so light on the skin - you only need a small dab as it spreads really easily. Our skin looked plump and hydrated after application, and our foundation lasted longer than usual with this layered underneath. It smells like sun cream too!
Tarte BB Tinted Treatment Primer, £29.16 (with brush)
Tarte's offering is unlike the others as it's tinted, so make sure you pick the right shade for your complexion. The coverage is sheer, but you could use it alone on days when you're after a fresh, minimal base. We really liked this - it felt incredibly creamy and left a semi-matte finish, so we could forgo powder. It helped even out minor discolourations and was barely detectable on the skin. You can wear it under foundation too if you want an extra dose of coverage.
Max Factor Facefinity All Day Primer, £10.99
This primer is great for keeping your skin shine-free throughout the day. If you're after a pore-blurring option then this isn't the best pick, but it's worth a look-in if you want to extend the wear of your foundation. We found our make-up required fewer touch-ups throughout the day when worn on top of this.
Smashbox Colour Correcting Primer in Adjust, £25
Smashbox primers have a well-earned reputation as some of the best in the business. This particular formula is green-toned to reduce the appearance of redness. While it didn't work miracles on our rosy cheeks, it did tone down the redness a notch, so we could follow up with less foundation. It also created a lovely silky veil over the skin. Plus, it kept our foundation on lockdown during a busy eight-hour day. It was our favourite of the bunch.
Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch, £26
Unlike the others, Clarins' offering comes in a little pot with a spatula to help retrieve a dab of product - much more hygienic than using your fingers! The luxurious formula really does make your skin feel incredibly smooth and velvety, which also providing a soft-focus finish to help blur pores and imperfections. Our foundation glided on like a dream when swept over the top.
