It's all about faking shadows in the right places; simply sweep product into the hollows of your cheeks, down the sides of your nose, along your jawline and a tiny bit on your temples too.
You can then amp up the effect by applying highlighter to areas you want to appear more prominent, such as the tops of cheeks, down the centre of your nose and your Cupid's bow (which is great for making your pout appear fuller!).

Smashbox Step-by-step Contour Kit, £35
A one-stop shop for all your contouring needs! Smashbox's offering includes three powders; a contouring shade with grey undertones, a bronzing shade with warm undertones and a cream highlighter. The contour powder is perfect for adding dimension to your face as the cool hue helps mimic a natural shadow. We also love the highlighter as it's totally matte, so it's great for achieving a lifted, brightened effect. What's more, the kit comes with an angled brush - good for nestling under cheekbones - and a little guide explaining where to apply each shade.
Sleek MakeUP Face Contour Kit, £6.49
This powder combo boasts heaps of celeb fans including The Saturdays and Lucy Mecklenburgh. The matte bronzing shade is soft and highly-pigmented, so you'll need to dust the excess onto the back of your hand before applying. The highlight shade illuminates the face with its super-shimmery champagne hue, and while it may look a tad too bold for daytime, it comes out great in photos during a night out. This kit is a fab choice for contouring newbies as it's such good value, plus it caters really well for darker skintones.
Bourjois Délice de Poudre Duo Bronzing Powder & Highlighter, £7.99
Bourjois is well known for its famous chocolate bronzer, and the brand has now updated things by throwing a highlighter into the mix. The bronzer remains the same, leaving a sunkissed glow when swept over the cheeks (although the warmness of the product means it's not the best for shading the hollows). The highlighter deposits a pretty iridescent sheen with a slight rosy luminosity, which doesn't look too obvious on the skin. This product would work well on paler skintones as the shades aren't too dark.
Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow, £49
This is certainly a luxury buy, but it's one you'll fall in love with at first sight! Encased in the weighty gold packaging are two powders created by A-list make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury. Both shades are finely-milled and feel soft as silk on the skin. The bronzer blends really easily, making it perfect for faking the illusion of film star-worthy cheekbones, while the highlighter adds a beautiful wash of radiance when applied to the high points of the face. Charlotte uses this product on all her celeb clients including Kim Kardashian West, Sienna Miller and Amal Clooney, to name but a few.
MAC Powder Blush in Harmony, £18
It isn't strictly marketed as a contouring product, but many swear by MAC's Harmony as their skin-definer of choice. It's a totally matte blusher in a medium brown shade with warm undertones (but thankfully it's not orange!). It lasts well on the skin and can be easily built up from a soft colour to something darker. It's also a great multi-tasker. Use it to chisel your cheeks (this works best for light to medium skintones), or apply onto the apples for a foolproof neutral blusher - perfect if you're sporting a smoky eye or a bold pout.
