Dark lippies were massive last year, and they're hot on our beauty radar for this winter too.

They're certainly not for the faint-hearted, and sporting such a stand-out pout requires some serious preparation!

Follow our tips to get the look:

1. Cold weather equals dry lips, so start by banishing the flakes. There are two ways to do this - either rub your smackers gently with a soft toothbrush, or use a lip exfoliator like Lush Lip Scrub, £5.25.

2. At this point your lips may be feeling a bit dry, so inject some hydration with a lip balm.

We love the Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips, £11.50, a 100% natural balm which will have your pout perky in no time. Leave to sink in for a while, then blot off the excess with a tissue.

3. When wearing such a dark colour, it's essential to use a lip pencil first. This will help to define your lip shape and also keep the colour from feathering. We like MAC Lip Pencil in Nightmoth, £12, which is a sultry blackened plum.

4. Now for the fun part - the colour! NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu, £17.50, packs serious pigment and provides a matte finish in an easy-to-apply crayon form.

Alternatively, grab a lip brush and Avon Ultra Colour Lipstick in Oxford Wine, £7.50, which is a deep vino red shade. Apply in feathery strokes, then add further intensity by slicking on another layer straight from the bullet.
